Porridge for Breakfast

Hello Everyone!

After 2 years, I completed my degree.. and moved to the new place!! *throws confetti*

I realized the last time I blogged was a very long time ago.. like 2 years?! Omg, haha. It’s not easy working full-time and studying part-time.. I thought I could juggle work, studies and blogging, but I was SO wrong. Gawrd, what was I even thinking?

While I wait for graduation (and wonder what I should do next), I thought of blogging/writing. I might do it, but not as frequent as eons ago(since I’ve to work), but it’s nice to do something productive, than staring into blank spaces. 😛

This morning I had cravings for century egg porridge (or congee, if you like it). I had this craving for awhile, so before Blueberry could return from his work trip, I went to Tiong Shian Porridge to satisfy my craving.

The stall was located in a coffeeshop in Chinatown. After Blueberry and I moved to our new place, it takes 10-15 mins to Uber here.

I ordered century egg porridge, braised tofu and ice tea. While waiting for my orders, I noticed the crowd was made up of families and groups of friends. It was nice to see families and friends spending time over breakfast.

My food arrived. After some quick photos and an instrastory post, I dived in.

(Blueberry, when you return from your work trip, lets come back for more!)

I love the food here.. my only complain is the cleanliness of the place. The tables and floors are little grimy. The table surface (in the photo above) had grease marks, which I removed to make it presentable.

Despite the cleanliness of the place, I kept returning for the food. I believe it’s also because Tiong Shian Porridge holds many memories for me.

It started when I was studying in school (Polytechnic). I would go there for late night suppers with my friends. When I started my first job, I worked in a general hospital near this porridge stall. My colleagues and I would have lunch/dinner/supper there. Once a while, during my night shift breaktimes, I would take a taxi to this place to buy food. Just imagine the taxi fare (fare +midnight surcharge+ waiting time) for a bowl of comfort ($4.50). -.-

Blueberry and I came here during our courtship. After we got married, we continued our porridge adventures (sometimes with our family). 🙂

I guess this sums up why it’s my favorite place to go for porridge.

Despite patronizing this place for many years, I’ve not tried everything in the menu. I wonder if I’ll be brave enough to try everything, or would I stick to my familiar favorites?

I guess I’ll only know in time to come. 🙂

That’s all from me.. Have a good weekend, and take care! ❤

Tiny Plates

When the recent new project at work started, I struggled with the demands of work and studying. It was very stressful.. After the third day of the project, I was worried and asked myself if I had made the right choice to work and study.

On the Friday evening of the first week, Blueberry and I went to Sanpoutei for drinks. Drinking helps me to unwind, especially after a long week at work. (Unfortunately, it’s not helpful if I need to study afterwards.. :p)

We had appetizers (or small plates) with sake.

Tiny plates of appetizers paired with sake. Clockwise from round plate- Bamboo shoot dressed with spicy miso, aburi chashu salad, moro-miso cucumber

I love the food served here.. the ingredients used are fresh, and the flavours of the dishes compliment each other.. I doubt one can ever go wrong with any combinations/orders. 🙂

.. however, there is only one complain I’ve of this place. I wished the food portion of of the small plates could be bigger?? I’m a fast eater, and it’s painful to force myself to slow down when there are delicious food infront of me.. ah, the agony!

I think tiny plates is a more fitting as a name. Lol. 🙂

Despite these tiny plates, Sanpoutei will still be my favorite place in town. ❤

Homecook dinner..

Shh… I’ve a secret to share.. I got a new job. 🙂

It’s my second week into the job.. and there is so much to learn!

New systems.. new cultures.. new faces..

Pretty overwhelming at first, but it’s starting to get better.

Everyday after work, I would look forward to dinner with the family.

What’s for dinner? Fried Tua Kwa (extra firm bean curd) in bean sauce. Yummy!

Dinnertime is a time where I can relax and spend time with my loved ones..

.. conversations over delicious dishes and rice.

It is simple, yet satisfying.

Craving for ramen…

Last December, I started watching Naruto.

In the anime, Naruto is often seen enjoying bowls of hot, steaming ramen. As I watched him slurp down his food, it made me want to have some too.

Blueberry and I had ramen on Valentine’s Day; I thought my cravings were settled.. I was wrong. As episodes progressed, I started craving for ramen.. again.

One day, I told my friend (her name means “trouble”, so let’s call her Trouble) about my massive cravings, and we decided to go to Ramen Keisuke for lunch.

Nothing hits the spot like a good bowl of hot, steaming ramen. Green tea cola and wasabi ginger beer to wash it down.

I’m taking a hiatus from watching Naruto.

That anime has dangerous influences. After watching it, I had cravings for ramen, oden and beer… :O

I blame Naruto for my ramen cravings.

.. I need to get a grip of myself.. or some dango. Hm.

Damn it, Naruto! Stop messing with the state of my mind!

It’s been awhile since we enjoyed good quality ice-cream.

Late one night, Blueberry and I decided to visit the supermarket.

As we were browsing, we saw an emptied (well, almost!) section in the freezer.

There was a Häagen-Dazs promotion (2 for SGD$20); a fantastic deal not to be missed.. I peeked into the freezer and saw 4 tubs of ice-cream left.

To my surprise, there were the flavors I wanted- chocolate salted caramel and royal milk tea!

It felt like we struck gold; I was so ecstatic that I wanted to throw pink confetti everywhere. 🙂

Ps: I’ve tried the chocolate salted caramel.. It taste so delicious!

Smooth, luxurious chocolate with bits of chewy salted caramel.. it’s heaven in a tub. Truly, a winner for chocolate and caramel lovers. ❤

Christmas with the Berries

Christmas time is a period of feasting in this family.

From Christmas eve to Christmas day, we would indulge ourselves with good food..  Quality time over a good meal bonds everyone together.

On Christmas eve, we went to Stew Küche..

It was our first time there.. We were surprised by the number of choices the place offered.. I got excited and went overboard with ordering. (oops!) There was so much to eat; we had to pack the leftovers.

I wanted to go for another beer, but I didn’t.. cos I ate too much! Argh.

As dinner ended, I was worried if I could even stand up and walk.. or suddenly throw up while walking.. Thank goodness, I made it to the car without any mishaps. (How embarrassing if someone had to tow me to the parking lot!)

The next morning (Christmas day), we skipped breakfast and went for lunch.

We had brazilian churrasco… There was so much variety- roasted beef, pork, lamb, chicken.. etc. It was a meat lover’s dream come true! 🙂

It was a very satisfy lunch.. and I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

The year just begun and it’s too early to say this.. I wish the next Christmas with my family will be as meaningful as this one.. I hope. 🙂

Chocolate comfort..

Snicker bars sitting on a pretty floral dish.. waiting to be eaten. ;) I've a love hate relationship with chocolate.. As much as I love to eat milk chocolate (can't stand dark chocolate..), I hate it when the extra calories show up on my waistline.

One of those days.. again.

A good piece of chocolate comforts and lightens my mood.

As it melts on my tongue, the world begins to look brighter and happier to live in.. The effect is almost magical, isn’t it?

Ahh.. the wonderful sense of comfort chocolate can bring to you. 🙂

Ps: There is a bar of chocolate in my fridge.. I’m wondering if I should eat it.. hmm.
